Shelterbelts of Life - return
The Shelterbelts of Life project continues thanks to the financial support of ING Bank Ukraine.
In 2024, 3 communities in the Kyiv region were selected to participate in the project, and the idea of cooperation with a farm in the Dnipro region to create a forest belt was supported.
It is also planned to create a nursery for growing planting material for the project on the basis of the laboratory of the Educational and Research Institute of Forestry and Park Gardening of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (NULES).
The project involves disseminating knowledge about forest belts through webinars and training.
An important condition for the continuation of the project is to attract co-financing from the public and other companies/communities, as the creation of forest belts is an important element of the country’s environmental sustainability.
Project results
On 8 November 2024, 1.2 km of a three-row shelterbelt consisting of 2,200 plants represented by 11 species was created in the village of Zatyshne, Hirske ATC.
The forest belt was planned by the project’s scientific consultant, Oleksandr Sovakov, Associate Professor of the Department of Forest Reproduction and Forest Reclamation at the National University of Life Sciences and Environmental Engineering of Ukraine. The area where the planting was carried out was prepared by the Hirske Village Council and the Eldorado farm. The fire brigade of the Hirske Village Council provided watering of the forest belt.
The forest belt was also created by the local community: Ivankiv Forestry Branch and Boryspil Forestry Branch of the State Enterprise ‘Forests of Ukraine’, the Department of Forest Restoration and Forest Reclamation of the Institute of Forestry and Landscape Management of the National University of Life Sciences and Environmental Engineering of Ukraine, the UAnimals volunteer community, Revniv School and Mountain Lyceum, Hryshko National Botanical Garden, Syretsky Dendropark, and Kyiv Garden Plant Nursery.
